Sustainability and SDGs in GLAMs
GreenGLAM helps galleries, libraries, archives, and museums (GLAMs) strengthen their role in implementing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Using innovative technologies such as augmented reality and AI visualizations, we offer solutions for designing sustainable and interactive exhibitions and collections. Discover how GLAMs in Austria can implement SDG-related projects.
What are the SDGs?
The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)also known as United Nations Sustainable Development Goals are a global action plan to promote peace, prosperity, and environmental protection. These 17 goals were adopted by the member states of the United Nations in 2015 and are intended to ensure sustainable development worldwide by 2030. The SDGs provide a comprehensive framework for addressing global challenges such as poverty, inequality, climate change, and environmental degradation.
The SDGs cover a wide range of topics that fall into three overarching areas: social justice, economic development, and environmental protection. Each goal is supplemented by specific sub-goals and measurable indicators that make implementation and progress measurable.

Why are the SDGs important?
The SDGs are not only a moral goal, but also an urgent necessity in view of the challenges of our time. They provide a common language and a clear framework for action for governments, businesses, organizations, and individuals. The goals make it clear that sustainability is not just an environmental issue, but affects all areas of social and economic life.
How can museums promote the SDGs?
Museums and libraries can actively contribute to promoting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), for example through energy-efficient building technology, educational initiatives, or sustainable exhibitions. Examples such as the Weltmuseum Wien, the Austrian National Library, and the Vienna Technical Museum show how climate protection, high-quality education, and the circular economy can be implemented. In addition, partnerships such as the House of Austrian History promote social integration and diversity.
International examples of sustainable exhibitions in GLAMs
Sustainable exhibitions in GLAMs set global standards for linking education, environmental protection, and innovation. Projects such as „Planet or Plastic?“ in Chicago and „Sustainable Fashion“ in London show how AR and recycled materials can promote the SDGs. The digitization of collections, such as at the Austrian National Library, also underscores the importance of resource-saving formats.
